Frequently Asked Questions

How are these art wares made?

The wild tamarind jumbie bead seeds are locally secured and preserved by being boiled in the pristine waters taken from the Caribbean Sea or in fresh rainwater. This process inhibits the germination of the seeds and makes them malleable enough for handling.

What is the care & maintenance requirements for my seedwork item?

It is simple: wear them like any other jewelry but keep them away from moisture. As with any organic product, they are susceptible to damage from excess heat and moisture.

Where do the proceeds of my purchase go?

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Botanique artwares provides further support for the island’s cultural development through the registered charity Intangible Cultural Heritage (Antigua and Barbuda) Inc. The charity’s mission is in alignment with our goals to support entrepreneurial programs led by women and girls.

How long has Botanique been selling this craft?

Seedwork has been a part of the cultural traditions of Antigua and Barbuda since slavery. For the past twenty (20) years, a University of Maryland (College Park) Professor of Anthropology has been fascinated by the seedwork, but more so the seed workers whose vision is aligned with African women and the impiraressa of Venice. Five (5) years ago, a seedwork artisan training project was launched to bring awareness to and preserve the dying craft. Recognizing the opportunities created by seed money, a group of women got together. Out of their efforts, Botanique grew organically into a larger conversation about environmental and economic sustainability. The initiative flourished during the COVID-19 pandemic, as many women lost their jobs when the tourism industry collapsed without warning. In May 2022, the decision was taken to move the project to the global stage and to present its unique products to a more extensive consumer base, alongside its history.

What type packaging does Botanique use?

Botanique presents its customers with their selected artwares in beautiful eco friendly gift packages which include handmade bags made by local island women entrepreneurs in Antigua and Barbuda.
